What did you do before Augustana:  I took a brief (three-month) break from campus after graduating in 2008 and trained as a community organizer.  Aside from that summer, I've been on Augie's campus for eight years now!

Which departments do you act as a liaison for? Asian languages/studies, Spanish, French, German, Scandinavian studies

What do you most love to tell prospective students about Augustana?  We believe so strongly in hands-on learning that we'll give you $2,000 to do it (through Augie Choice).

What is your favorite time/tradition of the Augustana school year? Nothing beats the fall at Augie. Campus is beautiful, and it's an exciting time as everything starts fresh.

What's great about the Quad Cities?  There's so much to do that is so affordable. It's a great place to live if you're on a budget, which most college students are.

What do you like to do around the community? If you know where to look, you can find some great music for way cheaper than what you'd get in a bigger city. Some of my favorites I've seen around here are the Black Crowes, Digable Planets, G. Love & Special Sauce, Martin Sexton, Susan Tedeschi, and of course Elton John.

Do you do volunteer service in the community? Where? I'm a Big Sister for the BBBS (Big Brothers Big Sisters) Career Navigators program!

Why did you decide to work in this field and/or at Augustana? I worked in the Admissions Office for the four years that I was a student. I sometimes joke with families that there's no major you pursue to be an admissions counselor -- it's something people just happen to find. But I think it's a great example of why we value involvement outside of the classroom so highly here at Augie. The things I did in college that weren't purely academic were often just as formative for me as the things I was doing in the classroom. I found a career through them!

What advice do you have for students who are searching for the right college for them? If the school is a good fit, it's usually worth a significant investment. I chose a small, private (expensive) school despite the fact that I was solely responsible for every tuition payment. I could have gone to a community college for free, but that wasn't right for me. I worked hard through college, and I worked 60-80 hour weeks every spring break and summer to pay the next tuition bill, and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Augustana allowed me to grow as a person, and that goes so far beyond just earning a degree.
