Augustana head coach Mark Beinborn announced the 2012-13 women's basketball awards today and senior guard Gianna Pecora was the big winner. Pecora was named the Vikings' Most Valuable Player.
The 2012-13 season marked the beginning of the Mark Beinborn era in women's basketball at Augustana in. After four years as an assistant on the Viking bench, Beinborn took over the head coaching reins this season. With just two seniors on this year's roster and five freshmen who saw considerable playing time, hopes are high for the future despite a 7-18 record.
In the final game of the 2012-13 season Augustana put up a good fight before eventually falling to defending NCAA Division III national champion Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 83-67 on Tuesday, February 19 in Bloomington, Illinois. The Titans used a 14-2 run to close out the first half to break open what had been a close game up to that point.
In a game where the two teams combined to shoot just 26 percent from the field, Elmhurst prevailed over Augustana 55-44 in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday, February 14 at R.A. Faganel Hall. The Vikings and the Bluejays only made 27 of 105 (.257) field goal attempts, including just four of 33 (.121) from three point range.
Despite holding a huge advantage in rebounding, Augustana dropped an 87-67 decision to North Central in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Saturday, February 9 in the Carver Center. The Vikings dominated on the boards to the tune of a 64-48 margin but were haunted by 36 turnovers in the loss.
