2001-02 WOMEN'S GOLF REVIEW
Vikings establish new school record for low team round early in 2001 season; Three Augustana players finish in top 10 of CCIW as Vikings place third in conference tournament
Rain wiped out the second, and final, day of the 2001 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's golf championship but it couldn't diminish the accomplishments of the Augustana Vikings. Third year head coach Ron Standley's charges placed third with a score of 358 in the tournament, which was held at the Pontiac Elks Club in Pontiac, Illinois on Friday, October 12.
Not only was it the highest finish in the CCIW for the Vikings since a second place performance in 1996, but three individuals ended up in the top 10 and earned all-conference honors. Millikin won the tournament with a score of 338 while Illinois Wesleyan was second with 345 and Augustana took third with 358.
Rachel Saplis (Coon Rapids HS, Coon Rapids, MN) was the top Augustana finisher with an 86, which placed her seventh among individuals. Josefin Holmberg (Oregon Davis HS in Walkerton, IN - Hallsburg, Sweden) and Megan Grevas (Piedra Vista HS, Farmington, NM) tied for eighth place with identical scores of 88. All three were named to the all-conference team.
Theresa Wenzel (Benet Academy, Naperville, IL) had a 96, Melissa Eckdahl (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, IL) shot a 104 and Jessica Kopp (Solon HS, Solon, IA) came in with a 119.
Last year Augustana placed fifth in the CCIW and each of the previous years the Vikings were fourth.
The Vikings established a new school record early in the 2001 season when they scored a round of 348 on September 5 in a double dual match against Knox & Monmouth at Highland Springs Golf Course. In that meet Holmberg shot a 79, Grevas had an 81, Saplis an 89 and Briannne VanLauwe (Blackford HS, Hartford City, IN) closed with a 99. That broke the previous record of 350 set in 1999 at the St. Ambrose Invitational.
The Blue & Gold won the Elmhurst Invitational on October 7 with a score of 368 behind the individual championship performance of Josefin Holmberg who shot an 81.
Holmberg led the team in scoring average with a mark of 83.8 in nine rounds with her low score of 79 against Knox & Monmouth. Grevas had the second lowest average with 88.3 in 10 rounds.
