1999-2000 WOMEN'S GOLF REVIEW
RON STANDLEY'S FIRST YEAR SEES NEW SCHOOL RECORD; FOURTH PLACE TEAM FINISH IN COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN AND KALLIE DALY'S FIFTH IN CCIW INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT
When the 1999 women's golf season began there was one major change in the Augustana Vikings and that was at the top. Ron Standley, a long time fixture in the Augustana athletic department, took over for D'Anne Gross as the head coach. Standley has been on the staff since 1988, first as an assistant coach of the women's track & field team and since 1993 the co-head coach along with Fred Whiteside. Standley's contributions as a top-notch recruiter are legendary around the Carver Athletic Center but he was taking on a new role as the head coach of women's golf.
While his recruiting prowess has yet to be felt, his no-nonsense approach to competition was immediately felt as the Vikings set a new school record in the first meet of the year. At the St. Ambrose Triangular on August 26, a full week before the school year started on the Augustana campus, the Vikings turned in a team score of 350 at Emeis Golf Course. That broke the previous record of 357 which was set at the St. Ambrose Invitational on September 26, 1998. Kallie Daly (Barrington HS, Barrington, IL) led the way in the school record performance with an 18 hole score of 76. Joining her were Jamie Rogers (Fremd HS, Palatine, IL) with an 89, Rachel Saplis (Coon Rapids HS, Coon Rapids, MN) had a 92, Michelle Bauer (Mendota HS, Mendota, IL) scored a 93 while Mellissa Klostermann (Davenport North HS, Davenport, IA) chipped in with a 102.
Daly was tremendous all season long, ending the season with an average of 81.8 in 10 rounds. She won the Illinois Wesleyan Lady Titan Invitational on September 18 with a two-day total of 157. She had a second day round of 76 and won the individual medallist honor by six strokes. She was also fifth at the Elmhurst Invitational.
In the final meet of the season she finished fifth in the CCIW tournament at the Pontiac Elks Club in Pontiac, Illinois on October 8 & 9. She shook off some back troubles to record a two-day total of 172 with rounds of 90 and 82. The Vikings were fourth in the team score at the CCIW tournament with a 766. Carthage won the tournament with a fine score of 724 (369 + 355) while Illinois Wesleyan was second with 726 (376 + 35) and Millikin was third at 733 (367 + 366).
Saplis was the second finisher for the Vikings with a score of 190 (96 + 94). Bauer was right behind with a 191 (96 + 95) and she was followed by Jessica Kopp (Solon HS, Solon, IA) with a 190 (96 + 94) and Linnea Holgersson (Waco HS, Waco, TX) had a 218 (108 + 110).
In addition to placing fourth at the CCIW meet, Augustana was fifth at the Knox Invitational, third at the Cornell Invitational, seventh at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational, sixth at the St. Ambrose Invitational and 13th at the Lady Titan Invitational.
