2011-12 Season - Vikings move to top of NCAA poll
![]() |
| Defense has been a key to Augustana's 3-0 start in the 2011-12 season. Here, Luke Scarlata (44), Bryant Voiles (34) and Brian DeSimone (20) put the clamps on in a win over St. Norbert on November 19. The Vikings are currently the number one ranked NCAA Division III team in the nation, according to D3hoops.com. |
Coach Grey Giovanine's 2011-12 Augustana men's basketball team has ascended to the top spot in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25. The Vikings, who were ranked second in the preseason poll, climbed to number one with a 3-0 start, coupled with a season-opening loss by previously top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan.
The number one ranking is a first for the team in the D3hoops.com era, which began in 1999. Augustana has been ranked as high as second in the 2008-09 and 2011-12 preseason polls and third during the 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons. The Vikings have been ranked in the top 10 at some point in six of the last seven seasons and have reached the top five in five of those. The last time the Augustana men held the top spot in the nation was during the 1981-82 season.
The Vikings received 15 of 25 first-place votes and 610 points in this week's poll. 4-0 Middlebury was second with 587 points and six first-place votes. Amherst (3-0) was a close third with 582 points and a pair of first-place votes. Marietta (3-0) and Virginia Wesleyan (2-1) each received one first-place nod and rounded out the top five. The Vikings' CCIW rival, Wheaton (4-0), checked in at 13th.
Augustana has started 2011-12 with wins at home over Aurora (102-68) and St. Norbert (79-48) and on the road at Wisconsin-Oshkosh (80-72). Protecting the number one ranking will be a tall task, as the team hits the road for Davenport, Iowa and the annual battle of the Quad-Cities at St. Ambrose this evening and then travels to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri this weekend for the Lopata Classic. The Vikings face Wisconsin Lutheran in the opening round on Friday and either Whittier or the host Bears—NCAA Division III national champions twice in the last four years—on Saturday.
