Sawyer earns CCIW "Player of the Week"

Augustana junior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) has been selected as the "Player of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in women's tennis, it was announced today. Sawyer, who became the most recent Viking to enter the 100-victory club, had a tremendous week, winning all eight of her matches as she propelled Augustana to four victories.
Operating at the number one spot in both singles and doubles, Sawyer did not lose a match last week. She beat Loras' Elizabeth Dickhut (6-0; 7-6) and North Central's Jenny Velasquez (6-2; 6-0) on Monday, September 3. She followed that with a 6-0; 6-0 win over Cydney Boyd of Millikin on Friday, September 7 and then beat Andrea Kerwin of Illinois Wesleyan 6-1; 6-2 on Saturday, September 8.
She also teamed with freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) in doubles wins over Loras (8-2), North Central (8-3), Millikin (8-0) and Illinois Wesleyan (8-4).
Sawyer is currently 5-0 in singles and 4-1 in doubles while playing with MacDonald at number one. Sawyer hit the 100 mark and she still has nearly two full seasons to add to her total. She is currently 101-40 and picked up her 100th win with a doubles victory along with MacDonald over the Illinois Wesleyan team of Andrea Kerwin and Helen Alex by a score of 8-4. Later in the match she beat Kerwin at number one singles to pick up her 101st win.
Sawyer has an impressive 61-14 record at singles where she has played mostly at number one and is 40-26 in doubles. This is the fourth time in her career that she has been selected as the "Player of the Week" in the CCIW. She won the award once as a freshman in 2010-11 and twice last year as a sophomore in 2011-12.
