2012 MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW

The Augustana Vikings put together another sterling year in 2012, finishing the season ranked 31st in NCAA Division III. In addition, senior Jonathan Smith earned NCAA Division III All-American status.

Men's cross country awards announced

It should come as no surprise that Augustana senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was named as the Most Valuable Runner honors for the 2012 men's cross country team. Smith, one of three senior captains for the Vikings this past season, earned NCAA Division III All-America honors at the national meet on November 17 in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Jonathan Smith runs to All-American honor

Augustana senior Jonathan Smith capped off a tremendous senior season in cross country by earning All-American honors at the NCAA Division III national meet on Saturday, November 17 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Smith, the lone Viking qualifier in the national meet, covered the 8,000 meter LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in an official time of 25:04.4 and placed 34th.

Viking men ninth at Midwest Regional

Behind a 15th-place finish from senior Jonathan Smith, coach Paul Olsen’s 21st-ranked Augustana cross country team took ninth place Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The race featured 10 teams currently ranked in the top 32 in the nation by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, including third-ranked North Central, which won with 58 points.

Gornick, Vikings second at Luther JV Cup

Augustana sophomore Nick Gornick finished second individually and the Vikings were second as a team Friday at Luther College's JV Cup cross country meet. Gornick covered the eight kilometer course in 26:16.0, just fourth-tenths of a second behind Nick Peterson of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Peterson's Blugolds won the team title as well.
