Exchange Programs & Summer Language in Germany (annual)
Spend Spring Term or a Summer in Germany
Four different programs in Germany mean that there is a program for everyone, from students with no prior German lanaguage study through dedicated majors. Programs outlined below include:
Spring Trimester in Passau (No German Required)
Spring Trimester in Regensburg (No German Required)
Spring Trimester in Eichstaett (2nd year German Required)
Summer Language Study in Eichstaett (2nd year German Required)
Each program has different strengths, requirements and emphasis. We recommend speaking with the German Department if you are interested in any of the programs below so that you can discover which option is the best for you.
Spring Exchange in Eichstaett, Passau or Regensburg
Augustana students, whether they study German or not, can enroll in the Catholic University (Eichstaett), the University of Passau or in the University of Regensburg through an exchange program with Augustana College. All three universities offer a "summer semester" which matches Augustana's spring trimester. Coursework is available in many disciplines.
Eligibility: These exchange programs are open to any Augustana student witha 2.50 GPA or higher in their sophomore year or later. There is no language requirement, though a knowledge of German is recommended.
Courses: Depending upon their background in German language study, students may enroll in a wide array of offerings in different disciplines. At Regensburg or Passau, students with little or no prior study of German can take all of their courses in English, while those with higher levels of German can enroll in a mix of English and German coursework. It is recommended that students who wish to pursue a German major or minor enroll exclusively in courses offered in German. As there are fewer English course options in Eichstaett, this program is recommended for students with a background in German language study. Both Regensburg and Passau are recommended for all students, regardless of their level of German language.
Calendar: All three universities operate on a semester calendar, with a Winter and Summer semester. For each the summer semester runs from April to July. This schedule allows Augustana students to enroll in the summer semester as an equivalent to Augustana's spring trimester. Students should expect to enroll in 9-12 credits of coursework and should be wary of potential overload charges depending upon their schedule for the rest of the academic year of their German program.
Costs:: Students on any of these programs pay standard Augustana tuition and fees. For students in Passau, a room in student housing is provided. In Regensburg or Eichstaett, the university will assist students in finding housing, but housing is at student expense. Meals and all travel expenses are at student expense.
Contacts: Students interested in any of these programs should contact Dr. Lisa Seidlitz in the German Dept. For more information about the host schools, please visit their websites.
Summer German Language Immersion Program in Eichstaett
Students of German at Augustana may opt for either of the exchanges listed above, but they also have the option of attending the Catholic University in Eichstaett through either exchange or an intensive language immersion program each summer.
SUMMER PROGRAM: The Eichstaett Summer Program is a month-long immersion program for summer language study. Students receive 6 credits of German from Augustana for this program. Students must apply directly to the Catholic University along with their application through Augustana. The program runs from mid-July through mid-August.

Why an exchange program might be right for you?
Are you an independent person, willing to challenge yourself in a new educational environment? Do you want intensive language study, or perhaps you want to really get to know a new part of the world? Do you want an authentic experience in an international university? Whether for a term, a semester or a year, exchange programs are perfect for students who want to experience what life and what college is like around the world. An exchange lets you go deeper into the host culture than you will if you travel with a large group of Augie students, and it gives you the ability to take classes with native students.
Add to this the fact that because you pay Augie tuition, exchange program courses are not transfer credits, and can count towards your graduation requirements. Also, in many cases exchange programs represent the least expensive programs available, since you are paying Augustana tuition, room or room & board, rather than paying both for tuition and for program costs of an Augie group program.
It takes an adventurous, self-confident and motivated student to truly get the most out of an exchange program, but if you are excited by the idea of living, studying and experiencing another culture without the "Augie bubble", exchanges might be just what you are looking for.
Augustana students are eligible to use Augie Choice to help fund international exchange programs.
The Application Period for Spring 2014 exchanges will remain OPEN until September 2013.
