Auditions for spring term shows

Auditions for spring term shows, "American Idiot" and "The Bald Soprano," will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Feb. 5-6. Callbacks as needed will be held at the same time Feb. 7.

"The Bald Soprano" runs April 16-19 and auditions will be held in the Wilson Center.

"American Idiot" runs May 7-10 and auditions will be held in the Honkamp Myhre Black Box Theatre.

The Bald Soprano

This play by Eugène Ionesco will be directed by senior Jonathan Quigley and staged in the Honkamp Myhre Black Box Theatre.

It is a unique satire on the English middle-class, in which "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" talk to each other at cross purposes, while their guests, "Mr. and Mrs. Martin" fail to understand, and the maid and a fire chief enter the absurd fray, getting nowhere at all.

This is the first play written by Romanian-French playwright Ionesco. Since 1957 it has been in permanent showing at the Théâtre de la Huchette, which calls it "An autopsy of contemporary society conveyed through the trivial and absurd statements exchanged between two couples."

"The Bald Soprano" holds the world record for the play that has been staged continuously in the same theatre for the longest time. With a record number of interpretations, it has become one of the most performed plays in France.

What to prepare

Those auditioning are encouraged (but not required) to present a prepared monologue. Monologues should be from absurdist plays or pieces.

American Idiot

Directed by Shelley Cooper, the rock opera  "American Idiot" will be performed on the Brunner's main stage. Music direction will be by Maureen Holmes

Green Day's "American Idiot" is based on the Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum album.

The two-time Tony Award-winning show includes every song from Green Day's album, "American Idiot," as well as several songs from its follow-up release, "21st Century Breakdown."

The book and lyrics are by Billie Joe Armstrong, book by Michael Mayer, and music and lyrics by Green Day.

In the story, Johnny, Tunny and Will struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly separated. An energy-fueled rock opera, "American Idiot"  relies on the lyrics from Green Day's album for the story line. (Music Theatre International)
