Augustana's Celebration of Christmas on Dec. 1 will include performances of Christmas at Augustana, a special dinner and neighborhood shop-and-stroll.

These will be followed by the lighting of the campus Christmas tree Dec. 4, the Festival of Sankta Lucia Dec. 11 and Lessons and Carols Dec. 13.

Neighborhood shop-and-stroll

From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., music, holiday activities and refreshments will be available in the College Hill neighborhood near campus.

Shop and stroll with friends and family, enter to win door prizes, decorate ornaments, grab a bite from local food trucks in Pocket Park or warm up with cookies and cocoa by the fire pit.

Stops on the Christmas walk include Fred and Ethel’s, Kavanaugh’s, Quilt Addicts Anonymous, Cool Beanz, Vintage Rose and Steve’s Barber Shop.

Christmas at Augustana

Christmas at Augustana has become a Quad-Cities tradition, touching audiences in sold-out performances for 10 years. There will be two performances: one at 2 p.m. and one at 7 p.m., in a spendidly decorated Centennial Hall, 3703 7th Ave.

Three hundred student musicians will share their talents in this highlight of the holiday season. Performances by the Augustana Brass Ensemble, Ascension Ringers, Augustana Symphony Orchestra, Augustana Choir, Augustana Concert Chorale and Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble are featured.

The Quad Cities’ ABC affiliate, WQAD, will stream the 2 p.m. performance live at Augustana.edu. The performance will be rebroadcast in the Quad-Cities area on Christmas Day.

Tickets are $21 for adults, $16 for senior citizens, and $11 for students and children.

Parking is available in the lot east of Centennial Hall. Additional parking is available across 38th Street and west of the Denkmann Memorial Building. The will-call desk will open 90 minutes before each performance. Doors open for audience seating a half-hour before performances. Latecomers will be seated at an appropriate break in the performance.

Christmas dinner

The smorgasbord-style Christmas dinner will be served between the two performances, from 3:45-8 p.m., in the Gerber Center dining hall. Tickets are $11.45 for adults and $6 for children.

Shuttle service will be available between the Gerber Center and Centennial Hall. The shuttle will pick up and drop off in front of Centennial and at the entrance of the Gerber Center (immediately outside of the dining hall). The shuttle will run from 3:30-7 p.m.

Lighting of the Christmas tree

At 4:30 p.m. Dec. 4, join President Steve Bahls for the annual lighting of the Christmas tree. Gather on the Quad behind Old Main for holiday treats and festivities, including a life-sized snow globe.

Joy of Christmas

The annual Joy of Christmas celebration Dec. 5 in Andover, Ill., includes music, the Christmas story in several languages, and communion by candlelight in the historic Jenny Lind Chapel. This year's speaker will be Augustana's Dr. Mark Safstrom, assistant professor of Scandinavian studies

After the service, there is a gathering for cookies and hot chocolate.

Augustana students may sign up to reserve a seat on a free bus to Andover. Buses leave campus at 6:30 p.m., picking up from 38th Street (near Andreen Hall) and from Westerlin Circle.

Festival of Sankta Lucia

Augustana's annual celebration of the Festival of Sankta Lucia commemorates the holiday with traditional Scandinavian carols, lessons and poetry. The program begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in Wallenberg Hall on the second floor of the Denkmann Memorial Building

It is free and open to the public. A reception with holiday refreshments will be held after the performance.

Lessons and Carols

The traditional Lessons and Carols service will take place at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Dec. 13. This beautiful spiritual presentation takes place within the intimate setting of Ascension Chapel. The Augustana Chamber Singers and Campus Ministries present the story of Christ’s birth in readings and song. The service is free and open to the public
