Holden Village: Cultural and Biological Time

holden village

How is time conceived and perceived? How do nature and culture impact our understanding of time? If you have ever wanted to take time away from the ordinary and actually spend some time thinking about time, this is the perfect program for you. Spend your January in the beautiful Cascade mountains of Washington State at the Holden Village retreat center and explore these concepts with Dr. Varallo (COMM) and Dr. Wegman-Geedey (BIO).

The program includes train travel across Big Sky country to Washington, and three weeks of secluded beauty and tranquility at Holden Village. No cellphones, no Wi-Fi, no distractions from the awesome beauty of the mountains, the crisp air of a winter sky and the peace that comes from quiet contemplation. But don’t get too cozy, there will be hikes and snowshoes, chores to be done and a community to enjoy as you spend your January intentionally far from the normal.

This program is open to all majors. It is particularly encouraged for students who wish to step back from a fast-paced academic life and spend some time in community and in exploration both inward and outward.

Eligibility and program cap: This program is open to Students with a 2.00 GPA and sophomore status.  This program will be capped at 16 students.

Course(s) and credits:  All students will register for the January course  COMM 311: Time Cultures, Communication and Deep Time  (PH). Pre-departure orientation meetings will be held during fall semester.
