DESCRIPTION:The Augustana Historical Society will hold its spring meeting with a program by Dr. James Lambrecht\, professor of music and director of bands at Augustana College\, on the history of the Augustana Symphonic Band.\n\nAdmission is free and the public is welcome.\n\nEstablished in 1874 as the Augustana Silver Cornet Band\, the ensemble known today as the Symphonic Band is not only the college’s oldest\, it also lays claim to the ensemble with the most colorful history. During World War I\, members enlisted in the Army and saw service as the Sixth Illinois Regimental Band. In 1928\, the band made an unsanctioned tour of Europe with a blind student\, Iverne Dowie\, who amazed audiences with his virtuosic violin performance.\n\nDr. Lambrecht\, who teaches trumpet\, conducting and brass methods in addition to serving as co-chair of the music department\, will discuss these and other highlights of Augustana’s rich band tradition.\n\nThe Augustana Historical Society\, founded in 1930\, exists to preserve the history of Augustana College\, and its relationship to the Lutheran Church and to Swedish-American immigration and culture. Its annual spring program is open to members and non-members alike\, free of charge.\n\nFree parking is available in the Centennial Hall lot\, located on the northwest corner of 38th Street and 7th Avenue. For additional information\, please contact Kai Swanson at 309-794-7419 or via email at kaiswanson@augustana.edu.\n
