The day you’ve been waiting for is finally here! Move-in day can seem a bit overwhelming. Lots of emotions, new locations, people, things. We get it! Here are a few tips to help make the day run smoothly:

Wear comfortable clothes

Let’s be honest; it's more than likely going to be hot during move-in. It’s important to dress for the weather, moving and carrying items. We suggest wearing comfortable clothes and some good walking shoes to get you through the day.

*Plug a fan in as soon as you get in your residence hall. Lots of people and movement can make a room warm up quickly!

Label everything

Whether you pack your things in totes, boxes or the iconic Ikea bags, be sure to label everything! Use some masking tape and a Sharpie and mark each package with your name, building and room number.

*One thing that is immensely helpful for our move-in crew is making sure you have no loose items so things do not get misplaced or dirty in the move from your car to your room. Make sure everything is in a bag, tote or box!

Coordinate with your roomie

Get in touch with your roommate(s) before moving in to make sure you’re not bringing the same things, such as TVs, microwaves, mini fridges, furniture, etc.. There is less space in your room than you think. Limiting the number of large things you bring will be best in the end.

Organize unpacking priorities

No matter how early you move in, there will not be enough time to get everything perfect. You will only have so much time between orientation, making friends and getting settled before convocation in the afternoon. Prioritize the things you need to have set up before your help [your family] leaves for the day.

*Pack a toiletry bag for the day of move-in so you can freshen up after moving things in without having to dig.

Let them help

Although it may be the beginning of your independence and you want to do all things yourself, let your family help. It will mean more than you know to them. Their assistance can not only lighten the load but also provide some comfort during this big transition. Plus, it’s a chance to spend some quality time together before you start your college journey. Don’t hesitate to let them be a part of this important step in your life.

*Be patient! There will be many first-year students moving in at the same time as you. All the helpers at Augustana are volunteers and are here to make your experience the best it can be.

Moving into your residence hall is a significant milestone filled with a mix of emotions. Embrace the excitement and accept the nerves as part of the process. Remember to appreciate the support of those who help you along the way and cherish the beginning of this new chapter in your life.

Welcome to Augustana, Vikings! We are so glad you’re here.
