Moving into your college dorm for the first time is a huge milestone. Extremely thrilling, nerve-racking and, let's face it, a little intimidating. To facilitate the process and assist you in creating a new home, I am writing this for incoming first-year students. You can make your dorm room a reflection of who you really are with a little preparation.

Understand your space

Knowing your space well is the first step before you start purchasing pillows or considering lighting. Luckily, Augustana has floor diagrams ready for you, whether you live in AndreenWesterlin or Seminary Hall

Take note of what is already included. Standard rooms include a bed, dresser, desk, chair, recycling bin and trash can for each individual. It's also a good idea to communicate with your roommate ahead of time; perhaps you'll coordinate colors together.

Pick your aesthetic

Once you know the basics, it’s time to check your Pinterest board and decide how you want your room to feel. Are you looking for a minimalist, clean look in neutral tones? Or perhaps you prefer cottagecore, Y2K or dark academia. There are no "right" styles; the possibilities are limitless. Make sure your environment is both relaxing and inspiring. You can always create your own color palettes!

Must-have decor items

Now is the time to turn your visual fantasy into a reality. There are a few must-haves that will instantly personalize your dorm. Start with string lights that are easy to hang for a cozy atmosphere. Use removable Command strips or adhesive putty — Augustana even recommends those for safely hanging posters, wall art and lights.

Add sentimental charm with photos of family, friends and pets. Bring parts of yourself with you and hang the art you make, a flag that means a lot to you and your favorite artist posters.

Keep it functional: over-the-door organizers store everything from shoes to snacks, and foldable ottomans serve as both storage and seating for your friends.

And here is Augustana’s suggested packing list for more clarity and less stress.

Budget tips

Decorating on a budget is totally achievable and environmentally friendly! Thrift stores and antique shops are full of inexpensive gems  —  from lamps to art supplies. A personal favorite of mine is Jackson's Antiques, a five-minute walk from Augustana’s Pepsico Recreation Center. Don’t overlook Facebook Marketplace.

Before you buy everything yourself, think about sharing larger items like mini fridges, mirrors, rugs and fans with your roommate. Effectively reduces clutter, giving you both more room to experiment with your style — and saves both of you some money.

Final touches

Creating your dream room does not have to be stressful or expensive; it simply requires a little planning, creativity and teamwork. Remember that your dorm is more than just a place to sleep. It's where you'll make memories, form friendships and develop throughout the year. Enjoy it!

Whether you go all out with decorations or keep things simple and cozy, what matters most is that your space feels authentic to you. Welcome home, Vikings!
