Campus event to honor veterans

All Quad-Cities veterans are invited to be introduced and recognized for their service on Monday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall on the Augustana College campus. The public is welcome to attend this salute to veterans and those currently serving in the military, hosted by Augustana students.

A quartet of Augustana Choir members will sing the national anthem. Ryan McCormic, a senior sociology major from Bloomington, Illinois, who will soon be an officer in the United States Marine Corps, will give the invocation. Augustana professor Dr. Dan Lee, a Navy veteran and faculty advisor for the Augustana Veterans Support Group, will speak about serving our country by serving in the military. The ceremony will conclude with a moment of silence for those who sacrificed their lives for our country, followed by the playing of "Taps" by Jill King, an Augustana graduate and U.S. Army veteran.

Donations will be accepted for Jason's Box, a Quad-Cities nonprofit organization that provides supportive services for veterans and those currently serving in the military. Jason's Box was founded by Teri Johnson in honor of her son, who lost his life in Iraq.

The event is sponsored by the Augustana Veterans Support Group and the Rho Nu Delta fraternity. Wallenberg Hall is located on the second floor of the Denkmann Memorial Building, 3520 7th Avenue. For additional information, contact Dr. Dan Lee at 309-794-7258.
