Journalist to discuss aftermath of 2008 financial crisis
Augustana will host journalist and author Kevin Roose for the annual Ellwood F. Curtis Family Lecture in Public Affairs in the Center for Student Life's Gävle Room (3435 9 1/2 Ave., Rock Island) on Monday, March 23 at 7 p.m. The lecture is open to the public free of charge.
Kevin Roose, a journalist who has covered Wall Street, business and finance, will speak about his latest book, Young Money: Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street's Post-Crash Recruits, which chronicles the story of eight young Wall Street brokers in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008.
Roose currently is the senior editor at Fusion, a new media company backed by ABC/Disney and Univision, and is the author of two critically acclaimed books.
Roose's first book, The Unlikely Disciple, was published to critical acclaim in 2009, while he was still an undergraduate. The book chronicles the semester he spent undercover as a student at Liberty University, the Reverend Jerry Falwell's "Bible Boot Camp" for young evangelical Christians. He has previously written for New York magazine and The New York Times and made appearances on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart, CNN, BBC, CNBC, MSNBC and NPR. Roose also was recently named to Forbes' "30 Under 30" list of media professionals.
The Curtis Family Lecture in Public Affairs was established in memory of Ellwood F. Curtis, who served as president and vice chairman of Deere & Company during his 42-year career with the Moline-based manufacturer. Curtis was active in the Quad-Cities community and was co-chairman of Augustana College's Agenda for Leadership Campaign, which resulted in the construction of the College Center.
Copies of Young Money: Inside the Hidden World of Wall Street's Post-Crash Recruits will be available in the bookstore for purchase for signing.
Arrangements for the appearance of Kevin Roose were made through Hachette Speakers Bureau, New York, NY.
