Mike Miller he/him

Assistant Professor of Physics, Engineering, and Astronomy

Dr. Mike Miller uses his mechanical engineering background to study how internal and external forces affect the human body. His research investigates the biomechanics of sit-to-walk transitions, examining lumbar joint loading, ankle muscle mechanics, and age-related changes in musculotendon properties when rising from different initial foot and arm placements. His research combines experimental data collection and musculoskeletal simulations to better understand how we move across the lifespan, informing strategies for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and assistive device design.

Prior to graduate school, Dr. Miller worked as a mechanical design engineer for Minnetronix, a biomedical device company in St. Paul, MN. His time mentoring summer interns, paired with his own undergraduate education at a liberal arts college, drew him back to a liberal arts setting to teach and mentor the next generation of engineers.

In his free time, he enjoys running, biking, and camping in the forests and fields around the Quad Cities. He also enjoys discovering new bands by checking out live music around the Midwest.
