Swenson Center advisory committee member, Bruce Karstadt, was honored as Swedish American of the Year by the Vasa Order of America at a celebration in Sweden last weekend.

Intern creates exhibit on Swedish arts

Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center is showing the exhibit "Swedish Arts in North America" through October 15.

D. Verner Swanson sermons and other materials, 1905-1981

D. Verner Swanson was a Lutheran pastor for over 40 years. He attended both Luther College (Wahoo, Nebraska) and Augustana College (Rock Island, Illinois), was ordained in 1916, and serving as a minister until his retirement in May 1957. The bulk of this collection includes sermons written over the course of his career. Also included are a few materials related to Verner and his wife Edith’s time at Luther College in Nebraska such as a valedictory speech, certificates, and portraits.

Swedish American Old Settlers’ Association of Knox County (Ill.) records, 1894-1943

The Swedish American Old Settlers’ Association of Knox County (Ill.) was a social group for the early Swedish settlers of the Knox County area in existence from 1894 until about 1941. The collection contains membership lists, the group’s constitution, annual meeting minutes, necrology rolls (death lists), several obituaries, newspaper clippings, and one photograph from 1935.

Collection on Bishop Hill Colony (Ill.), 1856-1917

This collection was compiled by Peter Wislander of Henry County, Illinois. It includes a naturalization document for a colony member, money printed for Bishop Hill, receipts, contract of dissolution of the colony, and a quit-claim deed for property in the colony. Bishop Hill, a communal colony, was founded in 1846 by Erik Jansson and his religious followers who sought freedom from religious persecution in Sweden.
