Open Sing

The Open Sing is open to all students who are interested in the possibility of singing in a choir this year.

If you want to experience singing with other Augustana students with no commitment required, come to the Open Sing.

Information about singing in choir

Can I audition if I have never sung in a choir at Augustana before?

Yes, anyone can audition regardless of if you have sung in previous years at Augustana or anywhere else.

Is it too late to audition for this year?

No, all you need to do is either respond to Dr. Jon Hurty or come to Rm 137 in Bergendoff and sign up for a time.

I have heard that choir takes a lot of extra time and I will be too busy to join this year.

Fact: There are choir options that don’t actually take up that much time in your schedule. We have choirs that meet from one to four days a week. There are a number of options for students that do not want to make a huge commitment but are interested in singing.

Do I have to be a music major to sing in choir at Augustana?

No, anyone at Augustana is welcome and encouraged to join a choir.

Do I have to be able to read music to sing in choir at Augustana?

No, we have many singers who read and many who don’t read in our choirs. It is definitely not a requirement.

Do I have to be an amazing singer to sing in choir at Augustana?

No, we have singers of all levels in our choirs at Augustana.

I don’t like to audition. Can I sing in a choir anyway?

Good question. No one I know likes to audition. Our hope is that you will be willing to come and sing for us so we can make sure you get into the right choir. If you still want to sing and are not trying out because you don’t like to audition, contact me and I’m happy to meet with you to see what we can do.

I love to sing, but don’t know about taking time for a class that is not in my major or area of study.

Many students join choir because they find it is a great stress reliever at the end of the day. Singing is good for your health and good for your soul. You may find that it is just the thing that clears your mind and allows you to work to your highest potential in your classes.
