Roundtable with Dr. Joseph Hyser '99

Students are invited to a roundtable with Dr. Joseph Hyser. He graduated from Augustana in 1999 and then got a Ph.D. at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he now runs his own lab in the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology.

His research focuses on how viruses and bacterial toxins reprogram host cell signaling pathways (particularly calcium signaling) to facilitate replication and cause disease.

Dr. Hyser has mentored 10 Augie students during summer internships and Alicia Strtak '15 is currently doing her Ph.D. work in his lab.

In addition to research, Dr. Hyser works with recruitment for the Immunology & Microbiology doctoral program and sits on BCM’s Central Admissions Committee for the graduate school. He is an excellent resource to ask about your next steps in a biomedical research career— particularly advice on applying for graduate schools or finding a job as a laboratory technician.

Free cup of brewed coffee or tea for the first 10 students to RSVP.
