The beginnings of Messiah at Augustana College

In 1879, Olof Olsson heard a performance of G.F. Handel’s Messiah in London and at that moment determined to form an oratorio society in Rock Island that would perform the same work. A little more than a year later, in 1881, a small oratorio society made up of faculty, students and community members sang portions of Messiah, thereby launching a tradition that continues to this day.

The first concert of the Handel Oratorio Society takes place during Holy Week, April 11, 1881. (Augustana Special Collections)
