Augustana's environmental film selection showing Feb. 12

Students at local high schools and colleges, including Augustana, chose the films in this year's QC Environmental Film Series starting Jan. 22.

The QC Environmental Film Series planning committee includes members from River Action, Nahant Marsh, Sierra Club Eagle View Group, the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities and The Singh Family Foundation. The committee reached out to the faculty advisors of environmental clubs to offer them a chance to participate in the series. Volunteer Kristen Bergren said they hoped to increase attendance by young people at the series.

The clubs would be responsible for choosing a movie from a list of 20 current environmental films from a variety of genres. Besides hosting on the day of the movie, students would be in charge of creating a display to coincide with the theme of their film about a club project, find a reflection speaker for a post-film discussion and help publicize their event. In turn, the QC Environmental Film Series committee would pay for screening rights, the venue fee and provide a $250 grant to each club.

The QCEFS Student Plan-It Committee was formed. Bergren said students had good suggestions that included aligning film dates with school calendars and showing the movies on campuses.
