'Crimes of the Heart' Jan. 27-29, Feb. 3-5

Augustana will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Crimes of the Heart" Jan. 27-29 and Feb. 3-5.

Performances will be in the Brunner Theatre Center. Friday and Saturday shows are at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 1:30 p.m.

A dark comedy, "Crimes of the Heart"  is set in Hazlehurst, Miss., in the mid-20th century.  It is the story of the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's home  after Babe shoots her abusive husband.

The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe's latest incident. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the "crimes of the heart" she has committed. (Wikipedia)

The play by Beth Henley won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was adapted into a film in 1986 and had three Academy Award nominations, including one for Henley for Best Adapted Screenplay.
