Geifman prize winners announced

Student winners of the yearly Geifman "Responses to the Holocaust" Prize  received their awards Monday at the annual Holocaust remembrance talk at Augustana.

 Winners are:

• Monica Gil, a junior instrumental music education and composition major from Vernon Hills, Ill. Her submission was "Belsen Silence: A Holocaust Remembrance Piece" for clarinet, cello, and speaker.

• Emma Albers-Lopez, a first-year student from Frankfort, Ill., majoring in biology, for her poem "Shadow. "

• Sarah Rebban, a first-year psychology and biology major from Rockton, Ill., for her essay "To See in Color."

• Yawei Zhou, a first-year psychology major from Sedona, Ariz., for her photograph, "Endless Grief."

 Submissions can take the form of an essay, research paper, poem, drama, film, artwork, musical composition or other creative expression. Entries were evaluated by the board of the Augustana Center for the Study of Judaism and Jewish Culture.

The winners will present their work at the Celebration of Learning May 3 and have it published on the Augustana Digital Commons.

Supported by the Geifman Endowment, the Geifman Prize in Holocaust Studies is an annual student competition with an award of up to $500.
