"Polar Soundscapes" will be heard Jan. 11
Oona Stern and Cheryl Leonard will perform "Polar Soundscapes" on Jan. 11 in the final event of the Art above 66° 33' exhibition at the Augustana Teaching Museum of Art.
The exhibit considers the issues, history and environment of the polar areas, spanning media, process and subject; from forms to the abstract, tactile to sound, analog to digital. It runs through Feb. 10.
The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays when classes are in session. It will open at 6 p.m. on Jan. 11 for visitors to view the exhibition before the program.
The performance will begin at 7 p.m. in Wallenberg Hall in the Denkmann Building.
Leonard is a composer, performer and instrument-builder who uses the sounds made by natural objects. Several of her pieces include video by Stern, an art director, designer, and visual artist.
The audience will hear sounds played on natural-object instruments, intertwined with audio field recordings in a concert of music inspired by Arctic and Antarctic landscapes and ecosystems.
Art above 66° 33' also includes work by Danish photographer Morten Hilmer from Greenland; William Stout, a fantasy artist and illustrator with a specialization in paleontological art, and several others.
