Why Augustana?

When I was looking for colleges, it was important to me to find a place that felt like my home away from home. I had taken a school field trip to Augustana and was able to hear the Augustana Choir sing in person for the first time and immediately felt a strong connection.

When exploring more of the school, I was greeted in a way that showed genuine interest and support. The campus, faculty and students welcomed me in a way that gave me confidence that Augustana was meant for me.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

No, but in the best way! Though I was passionate about music and education, I did not realize how quickly I would be drawn to leadership opportunities and trying to find every way to be involved. I was able to explore so many passions of mine that I did not even realize I had prior to coming to Augustana. If I was able to see myself now back then, I would be amazed at how much I have grown!

Who helped you get to where you are now?

I truly believe every person I had the opportunity to interact with at Augustana has shaped me into who I am today.

• Dr. Hurty and the Augustana Choir have made a significant impact on my life, as I have been able to embrace my passion for music. I have created lasting memories with this ensemble that has helped me to appreciate the world around me so much more.

• Dr. Crouch, my voice instructor, for always believing in me and challenging me in ways that helped me grow significantly throughout college. She is inspiring, and I feel so fortunate to have learned from her.

• Dr. Farmer and Dr. Zemek, my advisors, who have helped guide me throughout my college experience and encouraged me to explore my passion for music education.

• Finally, my family for always supporting me in everything I do and my friends for always being by my side along the way!

These are just some of the people who have helped me get to where I am now, and I am forever grateful for everyone I have met along the way.

Peak experience?

My peak experience was going to Germany and the Czech Republic with the Augustana Choir during the summer of my sophomore year. Being able to travel and perform with this ensemble for two weeks in other countries strengthened my appreciation for the world around me and connection with the music. We visited so many monumental places along the way, and I am so grateful to have been a part of that trip.

What surprised you?

I was surprised by how much I have grown throughout the past four years at Augustana. I was a part of so many opportunities that I didn’t even think were possible for me prior to college. I have been able to learn so much and create experiences that will last a lifetime because of the connections I have made.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice to go to Germany and the Czech Republic with the Augustana Choir on our summer tour. I am so grateful that my Augie Choice allowed me to have such a unique and lasting experience!

What will you miss the most?

There are so many things I am going to miss! One is how close the Augustana community is. I appreciate the connections that people are able to make with one another and the memories I have created throughout the years. I have never felt like just a number at Augustana, and I will miss the genuine relationships that have been created here.

Advice for the Class of 2028?

If an opportunity motivates you, follow your gut and go for it! You are more capable than you think, and there are so many people here who want to see you succeed. Be sure to appreciate every moment, even the ones that feel small. Every experience has the ability to impact you in amazing ways!

"Talent, leadership, dedication and a willingness to serve. These are the words that describe Abriana and the gifts she has brought to Augustana and developed these past four years.
