Artist statement

A very talented artist once advised me to choose something I give a f*** about when deciding what to create for my Senior Inquiry. This seems obvious because we are choosing to produce art that showcases our talent and who we are as individuals. However, I struggled to choose a theme that stuck with me, and yet I already knew what I wanted to focus on in my first piece. I was too focused on choosing a theme that would make sense to others rather than what made sense to me.

India Torres

India Torres is a senior from San Diego, Calif., majoring in studio art.

As long as I can remember, I have loved the study of light in art. Everyone experiences light literally or emotionally when you feel happy or content. However, with most things there is an opposite to light. Shadows or dark emotions are often close behind. My work commonly displays aspects of stark contrast between dark and light, and I continue on this path with my Senior Inquiry. I want to take a closer look at how light can completely change its surroundings. From the color of its setting to the depth a subject can gain from different lighting.
