FYI101 - Szafran

Rhetoric & the Liberal Arts

Assignment

You'll be examining newspaper articles to figure out more about what was happening during and before Coates's lifetime that provided the context and backdrop for his writing.  You will need to find two articles from the Historical New York Times or Historical Chicago Tribune database.

To figure out what to search for, think about the aspect(s) of Between the World and Me that most interest you.

Use your interests to determine:

  1. keywords for your search, and
  2. a date or date range to use to narrow your search.

**To access Historical New York Times from the library homepage, scroll down to "Search for articles and databases." From the drop-down menu, select "Databases A-Z," then scroll down to "H."**

Historical New York Times

This resource provides access to back issues of The New York Times from 1851-2013.

The Advanced Search screen will come up automatically.  Before you run a search, be sure to specifiy a year by selecting "on this date" from the "Publication Date" options; it's ok to only enter a year in the appropriate field (i.e., you don't have to specify an exact date). Type in a keyword or two in the search boxes, and run a search.  To further refine your results, explore these options on the left:

1) Further refine by month within the year(s) you chose
2) Expand the "Document Type" menu; choose "Article" or "Front-Page Article" (you can imagine why a "classified ad" might not be what you want!)

Historical Chicago Tribune

(To decide which to use - New York Times or Chicago Tribune - think about the geographic location of each; which is "closer to the action" of your area of interest, event, person, etc.?)

This resource provides access to back issues of The Chicago Tribune from 1849-1991.
