Women, Identity, & Feminist Activism in India

Assignment

You'll be writing a literary critical analysis paper, followed by a case study of a specific issue in India.

Your literary critical analysis should include:

  • at least two scholarly articles examining the text
  • additional information to lend context to your interpretation, as needed (for example, background about aspects of lived experience in India to contextualize your text and your interpretation)

Your case study should include:

  • at least two scholarly articles, and- 2-3 popular articles (from newspapers, magazines, websites, or blogs aimed at a popular audience), all of which should contribute in some way to your understanding of the issue, both in terms of facts surrounding the issue and responses/actions/ideas that may affect change

Find all of the databases referenced below on the library homepage by scrolling down to "Search for articles and databases, choosing "Databases A-Z" from the drop-down menu, then the first letter of the database's title.

Resources about Literature

1) Gale Literary Sources

  • Type in the name of your literary work in the "Name of Work" box, or the author in the "Person, By or About" box.
  • Notice that the results that are "Literature Criticism" come up first, by default. Notice the other options on the right, though; any type of content might be relevant to your interpretation!
  • You can also search within your results for specific ideas (such as the title of a specific work or poem) by typing your additional word(s) in the box in the sidebar on the right.
  • Everything in this database is full-text!

2) MLA Bibliography

  • You'll notice that this database looks exactly like Academic Search Complete; you can use any search tips and techniques you've already learned here, too!
  • Type the name of your work into the search box and click "Search."
  • As in Gale Literary Sources, add additional words to your search to focus your results.

Resources about Social Issues

The four databases that will be most helpful for researching your case study are all EBSCO databases. They'll all look the same, but they each include different content! Be aware of what you're searching (which database you're in) to choose the most effective words for your searches.

In each of these databases, be sure to add "India" to your search to focus your results on appropriate materials.

In these two databases, you'll find scholarly sources, as well as newspapers and magazines; all of these will be useful!

  1. Academic Search Complete
  2. PAIS (PAIS also contains papers from NGOs and other non-profit agencies, as well as government papers; these can be really helpful as you learn what's already been done to help "solve" these issues)

These two databases contain pretty much only scholarly resources. Start with #1 & #2 above, then move into these other two after you have a better understanding of your issue:

  1. Gender Studies
  2. Family and Society Studies Worldwide

Getting the Full Text of Articles

In most cases, just because there's no full-text link right there, that doesn't mean you can't get the article, often right away! Here's how to get your hands on the full text of any article you find:

  1. If there's a full-text link in the database you're in, just click on it!
  2. If you don't see a full-text link, go to the library homepage and choose "Journal, Magazine, & Newspaper Title Search." Enter the journal's title to see if the full text is available somewhere else.
  3. If Augustana doesn't own the article you're looking for, click on "Interlibrary Loan" from the options in the right sidebar of the homepage. It's free, and you'll usually get the article within 3-5 days.
