Why play varsity water polo at Augustana college?

After several years as a club sport, men's and women's water polo are part of the Augustana varsity sports line-up for the 2021-22 school year. Under the leadership of Coach Ryan Pryor (formerly the women's head coach at Virginia Military institute), you can make Augustana history as a part of our inaugural water polo teams.

Augustana is a selective, private liberal arts college ranked in the top-tier of U.S. News & World Report's Best Colleges. A member of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) the Vikings have won nearly 200 CCIW team championships and four NCAA Division III team championships, and have qualified more than 250 teams for national competition. You can help put water polo on our list of championship sports during our first varsity men's and women's seasons.

Here, you'll be supported by a community that sees how the mind and body work together, and invests in the deep and lasting success of our student-athletes. All students are considered for merit scholarships up to $28,000 annually.

Why play water polo at a DIII school?

Division III schools like Augustana focus on the connection between athletics and academics, allowing you to be the best student athlete you can be. You'll never have to prioritize one element of your college experience over the other. Augustana's coaches and faculty mentors understand the need for students to excel on both sides.

More than 40 Viking athletes have earned the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and Augustana consistently ranks in the Top 10 among U.S. college and universities, all division—and #1 in Illinois—for total number of NCAA Academic All-Americans.

Other benefits of playing sports at a Division III school:

• Graduate on time

According to the NCAA, more student athletes from DIII schools graduate from college compared to all other divisions. You won't have to sacrifice the major you want or the grades you deserve because of your time spent practicing and competing. We know the importance of balance and we'll help you find it.

•Explore the world and your place in it

DIII athletics give you more time and opportunity to explore life outside of the classroom. You'll have the chance to study abroad, join other clubs, attend academic conferences and be a part of the Augustana community while still fully participating in your sport.
