Screening of "Oedipus Mayor"/"Edipo Alcalde"

Collegia Classica will be hosting a screening of Oedipus Mayor/Edipo Alcalde, a modern interpretation of Sophocles' classical Greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex.

Synopsis:

Set amidst the rebel wars (representing the Theban plagues) of contemporary Columbia, young Mayor Edipo must mediate a peace deal between conflicting guerrilla groups and the army. Along the way, Edipo becomes engaged in a shoot-out on a lonely bridge, but returns fire and escapes.

Arriving in a highland village, Edipo learns that a prominent leader has been abducted and killed by persons unknown. Edipo becomes involved in the leadership of the town and begins a romance with Yocasta, a beautiful woman 30 years his senior (and the widow of the murdered Laio).

Meanwhile, the blind Tiresias wanders the town, making dire prophecies concerning Edipo, Laio, and Yocasta.

Tragedy ensues.
