How to create a preferred first name

Augustana  College recognizes that some students use names other than their legal names to identify themselves.

If in social settings, which includes aspects of the academic environment, you use a preferred or chosen first name rather than your legal name, you can provide a preferred first name.

Students can expect their preferred name to display on class lists, Starfish, the campus directory, Moodle, student ID card, dining and library, housing roster, network login, and email.

How to create a preferred first name

To create a preferred name go to the self-service portal. You will be prompted for your current network login and password.  Under "User Options," then "User Profile," select "Change Your Preferred Name" (located under your photo)  Enter your preferred name and select "Save."

After your request has been successfully entered, you will receive an email with a confirmation of your request and additional information.

If your use of a preferred name is related to gender identity, you also may submit a flag in Starfish to request gender-affirming support on campus. After submitting the confidential flag in Starfish, students will be contacted via email by our LGBTQ+ liaison, Dr. Kiki Kosnick, who can provide support and resources. Students should know that raising this notice is confidential and only the student and Dr. Kosnik will see it.
