Why Augustana?

Augustana really stood out to me for three reasons: the student clubs, small class sizes and the nature on campus. There are so many clubs on campus, and I knew I’d find ones that matched my interests. The small class sizes made for a more personal education experience, both with the professors and with classmates. I really enjoyed the animals, Slough path and nature all over campus.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

I did not think I’d be anywhere close to where I am now. My involvement in Campus Ministries, SGA and Sierra Club, along with my time in jazz band and Ultimate Frisbee were all experiences I am so happy to have had. I also came here initially for just computer science, but I am so happy to have added French as a second major.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

I don’t think I would’ve found Augustana without the help of my parents. They’ve been incredibly supportive, from helping me explore college options to always being there for me throughout my time at Augustana.

I don't think I would be involved in campus ministries and SGA without the support and encouragement of Pastor Melinda. She’s always been there as a leader, mentor and friend, and I don’t think I would’ve believed in myself to take on the different leadership roles I’ve done without her.

Finally, I want to thank my friends and roommates, who have always been so supportive and positive in my journey here. I couldn’t have done it without them.

Peak experience?

My peak experience at Augie would be my time as SGA treasurer. The connections I made with faculty, administration and students were incredibly meaningful, and the leadership and technical skills I learned have been so important in my personal and professional life.

Being able to help student groups, meet new people and work with the school’s administration was such an amazing experience. I am so thankful for the privilege to have served in that role.

What surprised you?

I am surprised by the amount of opportunities available on campus. There are so many organizations, events and activities available, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I am using my Augie Choice for my summer language program in Dijon, France. I am so excited to finally be able to use my Augie Choice for an immersive experience I know I will never forget.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss my friends and time spent with them on and around campus. I will also miss my professors and classes, both the ones for my majors and the classes I did out of my own interest.

Advice for the Class of 2029?

Trust your gut and go to campus events you don’t know a lot about! Going to events I had never been to before led to amazing experiences and meeting people I would’ve never known. Trying new things and taking on new leadership roles led me to where I am today, and I’m so happy I did them.

"From SGA to Campus Ministries, Ian’s contributions to our Augustana community are testament to his creative spirit and dedication. It has been an absolute joy to get to know Ian while witnessing him become proficient in French. In four years, Ian grew from intro-level language coursework to communicating insightful perceptions about challenging works of literature and issues of global relevance. I look forward to seeing how Ian will continue to share his gifts to make our world a better and brighter place."
