Why Augustana?

I grew up in the Quad Cities, so Augustana has always been a part of my life. I had heard of Augie's outstanding arts programs, which allowed me to do what I love while being close to home.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

Yes and no. Being a commuter student, I had no idea how many opportunities I would have on campus. Attending the Activities Fair and pushing myself to try something new allowed me to make those connections, despite living off campus.

Four years ago, I wouldn't have thought I'd be graduating as a theatre arts and film major. I'm excited to see what opportunities there are to explore after college!

Who helped you get to where you are now?

I am so grateful to have had so many supporters and helping hands throughout my four years here. I can't imagine my journey here at Augustana without them all.

• Mike Turczynski, my advisor and mentor who has believed in me every step of the way. Because of his continuous support and advice, he has helped me grow in my skills, and as an individual.

• Stacy Barton and Shelley Cooper for giving me countless opportunities to express my creativity and learn new skills.

• Dr. Jennifer Popple and Jeff Coussens for teaching me to embrace new challenges. Their classes allowed me to truly appreciate the community and relationships made in the theatre department.

• And of course my friends, family and teammates for cheering me on at every turn in the road.

I truly don't know where I would be without all these amazing people.

Peak experience?

There have been so many notable experiences in my time here. It's impossible to pick just one! I've been involved in quite a few productions over the past four years. It's been a great way to gain hands-on experience, while also making lifelong friends and connections.

What surprised you?

I was surprised how personable my classes felt. By the end of the first week, everyone in class would know each other's names. It was amazing being able to be seen and have hands-on experiences in a smaller classroom.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice in 2023 to travel to Japan with the Augustana Symphonic Band. This incredible experience allowed me to expand my musical knowledge and explore a new country.

What will you miss the most?

What I will miss the most is the community of Augustana's campus. Being involved in several programs, I always had friend to walk to class with or weekend plans to look forward to.

Outside of class, there are always activities and events to attend. You never know where you'll make a new friend or find a new hobby!

Advice for the Class of 2029?

Ask questions! I know it sounds so simple, but sometimes it can be a little scary to ask a question or ask for help. College can be overwhelming, and your professors are here to help you succeed!

"Natalie has shown incredible growth throughout their time at Augustana. They have been a constant, calming presence in the theatre department, stage managing and designing multiple aspects of various productions, and they are always willing and able to go above and beyond in their roles to ensure a smooth and quality production. They have immersed themselves not only in the Augie community, but the local theatre community as well, and with that experience, I have no doubt they will succeed in their endeavors wherever they go!"
