Why Augustana?
Liberal arts education is the cornerstone of why to choose Augustana. Unlike big universities, Augustana teaches a diverse and intellectually rich foundation that cultivates both professional and academic skills. These abilities are essential to being a standout candidate in the workforce and shaping yourself into a well-rounded, open-minded and complex individual.
Lastly, the professors here are seriously extraordinary. My final note, do not overlook small institutions!
Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?
Absolutely not, and for the best! I joined the women's wrestling team my first week at Augustana on a whim. Turned out to be one of the best experiences I have had at Augie.
Academic-wise, originally I was pursuing my studies in political science and public policy, and through exploring different courses, I am now graduating as a double major in public health and environmental studies with a political science minor.
Who helped you get to where you are now?
I have a handful of people I'm deeply grateful to for helping me get to where I am today. First and foremost, my father, who encouraged me to visit Augustana, even with the pushback of a stubborn, uninterested high school student that I was at the time. The third time I visited, I met several faculty members in the areas of study I was interested in. This changed my very divisive mind.
Dr. Lena Hann, currently an associate professor of public health, was one of the wonderful people I met with that day. Through our in-depth conversation and expansive discussion about the opportunities Augie had to offer, she ultimately solidified my decision.
Since then, my advisors, specifically Dr. Sarah Lashley, associate professor of environmental studies, have provided necessary guidance and advice that has helped me succeed.
Peak experience?
Winning my first wrestling match my sophomore year! As someone who came onto the team with no prior experience, this was a huge milestone for me. I will never forget the unwavering support from my teammates and coaches.
What surprised you?
The connections here! Be ready to have access to a range of networks and resources.
Also, the diversity of the community. Coming from Chicago, I was used to a diverse mosaic of people and cultures. I naively assumed, solely based on Augustana's location, that this aspect would be lacking.
How did you use your Augie Choice?
I used Augie Choice for my internship between my junior and senior year, as a summer Intern in the office of Andre Vasquez, 40th Ward Alderman in Chicago.
What will you miss the most?
The wonderful, close-knit community, my lovely friends, and Augie's amazing faculty and staff. Oh! And the beautiful campus, specifically the Slough.
Advice for the Class of 2029?
Take advantage of every opportunity. Stay after class and talk to your teachers! They will be your first mentors here. Lastly, breathe! It can be overwhelming to come to college, especially if it's your first time away from home. You've got this. Everyone is here to support you!
