Why Augustana?

To be completely honest, the better question is “why not"? As an international student, committing to a college without visiting was scary. But I knew I wanted to feel valued and not like a number.

Augustana became everything I hoped for and more. With a close community and professors who truly care, connection came easily. It became a place where I could grow into a better version of myself. If I could go back, I would choose Augustana again and again.

Are you where you thought you'd be when you first came to campus?

Not at all. I could not be further from that, actually. I remember my first day; I could not even find my way to the dining hall and felt so lost and confused. There were times when everything felt hard and unfamiliar, and I questioned if I would ever get the hang of it.

But those challenges pushed me in ways I needed. Over time, I grew into spaces that once intimidated me and learned to be confident even when I did not have all the answers.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

“A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” – Proverbs 16:9 NKJV

Nothing I have done would be possible without the grace of God.

As the saying goes, it takes a village. So many people have shaped me in ways they may not realize.

My parents have believed in me even from seas away. My mom has talked to me every day during my four years here, and my dad has always reminded me to keep going, even when I did not believe in myself. My brother has always been someone I could talk to.

I am deeply grateful to relatives who have supported me through resources, opportunities and a place to call home. My friends from back home have been constant sources of support.

At Augustana, I have been immensely supported by faculty like Dr. Maria Hannah, Dr. Jessica Nodulman, Dr. Michelle Crouch and Dr. Lena Hann. And of course, my friends here, who have been there every step of the way.

To those I have not mentioned, I hope you know you have had a profound impact on me.

Peak experience?

It is hard to name just one moment, but my junior year stands out as a whole. That was when I truly immersed myself in public health and gained a stronger sense of direction. I worked on meaningful projects that I was passionate about, joined the Augustana Concert Chorale and continued as a Residential Life Community Advisor. I also completed my internship during the summer of this year. More than anything, I would say it was the year I grew more confident and truly felt like I found my place.

What surprised you?

What surprised me most was how many opportunities existed on a small campus. I thought a liberal arts school might limit me, but it did the opposite. I explored classes I never expected to love, and I feel more well-rounded because of it. I was also surprised by the kindness here, where even people who do not know you greet you with a smile.

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I used my Augie Choice to support my internship in Washington, D.C. While my internship was paid, Augie Choice helped me get settled, purchase professional attire and ease financial stress. It gave me the freedom to fully focus on the experience and step outside my comfort zone.

What will you miss the most?

The familiarity. I know change is part of life, but this place has been my home for four years and has become such a part of me. The real connections with professors, the people I met through work and community, and the small routines like walking to class or rushing to The Brew. I will miss seeing the people who truly care about me and the constant support I knew I had in every corner. This place helped me grow, and I will always be grateful.

Advice for the Class of 2030?

I know a part of you feels like you need to have everything figured out. I did too. But take a chance when you see one. You never know what will surprise you. There is something you are good at, and Augustana will help you discover it, but you have to let it. Trust yourself, and trust the process.

"Kidist joined our team as a Community Advisor (CA) at the beginning of her sophomore year. She stepped into a challenging situation as a new CA and distinguished herself as someone who approaches the job with care, a big heart and a warm smile for all of her residents. As a senior, she provides support and mentorship to newer CAs and is always ready to provide open, honest and professional feedback to her supervisors."
