Campus update: Celebration of Learning and more!
May 3, 2022
Tomorrow: Things we've learned!
The annual showcase of work by students, faculty and staff is tomorrow, so plan to see some presentations and posters.
This year's featured presenters include Uppsala University's Centre for Environment and Development Studies; students Anna Bross and Sarah Allen on their study of chemistry students; and Colleen Kilbride ‘09, attorney at the National Immigrant Justice Center.
There is SO much going on. Consider stopping by the annual Senior Art Show in Centennial Hall. Or sign up for a demonstration of quantum entanglement in the laser lab.
It's honors and awards season
It's the time of year when many academic honors and awards are announced. Offer congratulations to these students:
Audre Lorde Writing Prize winners and department awards
A special congratulations to Madison Watwood, winner of the $5,000 Nils Hasselmo Award for Academic Pursuit.
Watwood '23, a history and political science double major from Elgin, Ill., plans to use the award to fund a study abroad trip, possibly traveling to China next summer to continue her research project examining race, identity and local politics as related to Greek life.
Update on positive cases
Augustana College has seen a slight increase in COVID-19 cases recently. Eighteen community members (12 students and six employees) tested positive last week.
Three positive cases came from testing of 101 people on campus; the other cases were self-reported.
COVID mitigation efforts remain in place on campus: contact tracing, isolation and quarantine housing, and the required weekly surveillance testing of unvaccinated community members.
Those who are resuming normal activities after testing positive for COVID or being a close contact (regardless of vaccination status) should be masked (tight-fitting) for 10 days when in public or in contact with others.
The college masking policy is unchanged: Masks are not required on campus.
However, faculty and event organizers, at their discretion, may require masks for people in their classrooms and at event venues. N-95, KN-95 and KF-94 masks are available in the Dean of Students office.
Cases in Rock Island County remain low, at 13.5 per 100,000 population this week.
Today's updates:
• Communication and Marketing is looking for students for a promotional video to be shot May 10-11 on campus. Students will be paid an hourly rate for their time. Fill out this interest form if you'd like to be included.
• Graduating seniors are invited to share a photo for a slideshow that will be shown at commencement.
• It's a big weekend for arts and music: the Threepenny Opera, UNYK show, Symphony Orchestra concert, Percussion Ensemble and Sloughfest.
Parking permits for next year go on sale tomorrow.
For the record: In April, senior Josh Wintroub had a no-hitter against Cornell College and sophomore Nadia Ranieri threw a no-hitter against Monmouth.
In their first season, the women's water polo team won a spot in the inaugural USA Water Polo national championships this weekend at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. Good luck!
