Dr. Allie Barringer specializes in community psychology, human development, and prevention science. An Augustana College alumna, she earned her B.A. in Psychology before completing her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she also completed a minor in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. Her teaching and scholarship focus on the ways individuals develop meaningful connections to the communities and environments around them, with particular attention to youth development and community well-being. Dr. Barringer emphasizes critical
thinking and community engagement in her courses, encouraging students to connect psychological theory to real-world issues.
Dr. Barringer directs the Augustana College Community Engaged Social Science (ACCESS) Lab, where undergraduate students partner with community organizations to conduct research and program evaluation that addresses local needs. Dr. Barringer has particularly enjoyed partnering with local organizations such as the Figge Art Museum, Rock Island–Milan School District, and a diverse network of local artists, activists, and community leaders.
Dr. Barringer’s work is informed by both research and professional experience in the criminal justice system, where she has worked alongside justice-involved youth and adults and examined the impact of incarceration on families and communities. She continues this commitment through her involvement with the Augustana Prison Education Program, where she teaches courses and collaborates with colleagues, students, and community partners to expand access to higher education in prison.
Dr. Barringer is happy to call the Quad Cities home and lives in Rock Island with her husband and daughter.
