I practiced law in Moline for three years in the late 1970s, after which I worked in trust administration for 21 years at First Midwest Bank, retiring as a senior vice president and trust officer in 2000.
In 2005, after five years of retirement, I accepted a position as a part-time assistant professor in the business administration department. I teach a seminar in personal financial planning. In this course students create their own financial plan including financial goals, a net worth statement and an anticipated budget for their first year of full time employment. This is a very practical course and it is open to students of any major. I believe it will prove beneficial to them as they begin their lives as independent adults.

• Tierney Brosius talks about "The Beauty of Insects"
I am an entomologist with special interests in insect conservation, urban ecology, and cultural entomology.
I have an active ongoing research program that currently focuses on ground beetle diversity within urban landscapes. My goal is to understand how mesophication (lack of naturally occurring fire) and urbanization interact to influence forest ecosystem composition and structure at multiple trophic levels.
Undergraduate students from Augustana have been directly involved in the data collection of many of my projects and have had the opportunity to present our results at local and national scientific meetings. I am currently working on multiple student co-authored peer reviewed manuscripts.
In my classrooms you will find a student-centered approach. My students are given the opportunity to become actively engaged with the material. I am very passionate about students understanding the importance and application of what they are learning in the classroom. Even while my class is learning about something as specific as the life history of a squid or a jellyfish, we are constantly relating that information back to the larger picture of ecology and evolution.

Chris Beyer grew up in a Navy family. He lived all over the U.S. and spent four years in Japan.
Beyer joined Augustana in September 2015.
He said he was attracted to Augustana when he was looking for a position at a small, private liberal arts college.
"I’m particularly excited to work at a place where integrating the curricular and co-curricular experiences is a major feature of the strategic plan, and I’m eager to work with everyone here to explore creative approaches to this effort," he says.

Advice for students searching for the right college
Think about how you want to look back and remember your college experience: do you want a community where you will make friends and have supportive professors? Do you want to get involved in activities on campus and be able to have fun off campus? Do you want to be prepared for what comes after college - job, graduate school, etc.? Do you need help paying for college?
Then, get started!
Visit colleges, ask questions, talk to current students, sit in on a class, go to a practice. You'll know when you've found the right place. It's not just what you'll do after your four years in college that is important, it's who you will become during those 4 years.
What kinds of students tend to flourish at Augustana?
We are a student-ready college. Students can come to us undecided, or with ideas for a triple major; students can know exactly what they want to be involved in, or be ready to explore our 170+ clubs and organizations. Students flourish at Augustana when they are curious learners, care about one another, and are willing to explore and experiment.
