Phi Beta Kappa membership

Celebrating excellence in the liberal arts and sciences

Phi Beta Kappa

Membership

Each spring, the Augustana College Zeta of Illinois Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa invites members of the graduating class to join the society.

Is Phi Beta Kappa worth joining?

An invitation to join Phi Beta Kappa recognizes and honors exceptional academic achievement in the arts and sciences. Only about 10% of colleges and universities nationwide have a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, and, at Augustana, only 7-10% of students from each graduating class are invited to join.

Phi Beta Kappa membership is worth noting on a résumé or an application to graduate school. Phi Beta Kappa is known for being the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, and will be recognized by employers and decision-makers as an extraordinary achievement.

Who is invited to join?

Students do not apply for membership. Invitation to membership is contingent upon the fulfillment of nationally-established stipulations as applied by the leadership of the Zeta Chapter of Illinois. No right to election shall adhere to any student solely by reason of fulfillment of the below criteria.

Criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • Coursework indicating both breadth and depth of study in traditional liberal-arts disciplines
  • Graduating with high distinction (i.e., magna cum laude or summa cum laude)
  • Evidence of upstanding character and the utmost regard for academic integrity
  • Written recommendation from the Augustana College faculty
