Viking Connections: Derek Biliskov

Derek Biliskov

Derek Biliskov is Technology Risk Management Analyst III at CME Group. In this role, Biliskov identifies and evaluates technology risk.

Biliskov says:

“I was a double major in both accounting and management information systems (now part of the business intelligence major). During an Augustana College career fair (coordinated by the accounting department), I met an alumnus working at RSM US LLP who introduced me to career paths that connect accounting with information systems.

Many accounting students begin their careers in traditional audit or tax lines of service. However, most (if not all) large public accounting firms also offer consulting practices that include specialized areas such as risk advisory or IT risk advisory. These practices draw heavily on professionals with both accounting and technology backgrounds, which leverage professionals’ knowledge of audit with practical information systems knowledge.

IT risk consulting and risk advisory has a great career outlook. It blends audit-related competencies with expertise in information systems, information technology, and cybersecurity.

A little bit more about me: I began my career with a top 10 U.S. public accounting firm as a Technology Risk Consultant, where I worked on a range of engagements, including IT general controls, SOC 1/SOC 2 examinations, and SOX (Sarbanes–Oxley) compliance.

I later transitioned to another top 10 firm in a similar capacity, where I expanded into managing those engagements along with projects that incorporated the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (and other NIST publications) as well as some of the ISO frameworks, before ultimately moving into a more specialized financial sector risk role.

If you’re an accounting or information systems student exploring your options, I am happy to give some perspective on my experience in this field and answer any questions you may have!”
