Film: 'Stranger than Fiction'
Augustana Leaders in Vocational Exploration (ALIVE) will show the film "Stranger than Fiction," starring Will Ferrell.
All are welcome to see the film, join a discussion and enjoy a gourmet popcorn bar.
The 2006 fantasy comedy-drama stars Ferrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman, Queen Latifah, and Emma Thompson. Harold Crick (Ferrell) begins hearing a voice narrating his life – seemingly the text of a novel in which it is stated that he, the main character, will soon die – and he frantically seeks to somehow prevent that ending.
Opening reception: Works by Peter Xiao
An opening reception will be held for "Thingamajigs and Right-Facing Nudes," works by Dr. Peter Xiao of Augustana College.
Artist's statement: "Shown here are my paintings of thingamajigs used up and tossed out daily by us without thought or care, as concrete things — even if nondescript — deserve our attention and building up nowadays, not to mention minute reflections, fleeting, unnamable color tones that shift as if playing games each time one looks at them. The nude studies were made in the company of my doing the same, which explains why they face the same direction, in homage to the tradition, to people who model for artists and to the beauty of the human form. "
Born in Beijing, Dr. Xiao grew up during China’s Cultural Revolution. Since 1989 he has taught drawing and painting at Augustana, and co-chaired Asian Studies. He shows work nationally, occasionally overseas, and now lives with his family in Iowa.
Mr. Augustana
Mr. Augustana is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society sponsored by Chi Alpha Pi.
This is the 20th year for the annual event. Male contestants perform a dance and a talent, show off their formal and swim wear, and participate in Q&A.
One way to support the American Cancer Society is to buy a Mr. Augustana T-shirt. Shirt orders close Sept. 29.
Tickets will be sold in the Brew Oct. 10-14 and the night of the show. Tickets at $5; receive $2 off the ticket when purchasing the shirt.
8x8 chess club meeting
The 8x8 Chess Club will meet during this time. They will play casual, instructional games, participate in opening/puzzle studies and occasionally hold events ranging from beginner boot camps to tournaments.
Meetings will occur weekly at this time.
Mahjong club
The Mahjong club hosts a tutorial session and competitive play. There will be traditional snacks provided. No experience necessary.
Oktoberfest fundraiser
The Speeds and Roundels will host their annual Oktoberfest from 4-7. The event will offer games and raffle prizes with food and drink available.
Proceeds will go to Closet2Closet, a local nonprofit that helps supply clothes and hygiene products to youth and families.
Hispanic Film Festival begins Oct. 26
Augustana College will sponsor its 26th annual Hispanic Film Festival on Wednesdays, Oct. 26-Nov. 30. All films will be shown at 7 p.m. in Hanson Hall of Science, Room 102. Films are free and open to the public.
Prison Pen Pal Program meeting
Augustana's Prison Pen Pal Program works in partnership with Companions Journeying Together, a not-for-profit organization that serves people who are incarcerated in Illinois and their families.
The goals are to facilitate communication and build healthy relationships.
Students can learn about the program at this informational meeting.
