After earning my Ph.D. in geology from the California Institute of Technology, and completing a three-year post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Oklahoma, I began teaching at Augustana in 1995. With the help of undergraduate students, I built a modern experimental petrology laboratory (the volcano lab.) Funded through grants awarded by the National Science Foundation and the Augustana Research Foundation, this facility is one of the few of its kind in the world dedicated to undergraduate student learning and research. Hands-on student research projects in the “volcano lab” investigate sub-volcanic processes such as melting of rocks, crystallization of minerals, formation of ore deposits, and degassing of volcanoes in an attempt to answer questions about the evolution of continental crust and the formation of valuable mineral deposits. If you're interested in quantitative applications of geochemistry, or if you just think melting rocks or growing exotic crystals or heat-treating gemstones at high temperatures and pressures sounds cool, then there's a place for you in the volcano lab!

Chloe joined the professional faculty at Augustana College as a Clinical Supervisor and Instructor in 2024. As a native of the Quad Cities, Chloe is grateful to return to the area alongside her family and friends. Before arriving at Augustana, she spent the past six years gaining focused experience in outpatient pediatric clinics in the Quad Cities and the Greater Chicago Area. She is enthusiastic about mentoring and guiding both undergraduate and graduate students on their path to becoming speech-language pathologists, while working closely with clients and families in the community. Her clinical interests include early language development, language disorders, fluency, and speech-sound disorders. Outside of her professional work, Chloe enjoys traveling, reading, playing the piano, and tennis.

Although I consider myself a geomorphologist, I have broad interests in the geosciences. My PhD work focused on processes of sediment transport and deposition by temperate glaciers, while my MS research focused on marine sedimentation and tectonics. I am also interested in stratigraphy, structural geology, and tectonics. My active research these days is mostly on midwestern Quaternary and Holocene deposits as well as environmental geochemistry.
At Augustana I teach:
- GEO-101 Physical Geology
- GEOL-105 Physical Geology in the Rocky Mountains (first-year students only)
- GEOL-116 Energy Resources (Learning Community)
- GEOL-309 Geomorphology
- GEOL-330 Hydrogeology
- GEOL-340 Structural Geology
- GEOL-450 Research Methods
- GEOL-451 Senior Inquiry (independent advising)
I am also engaged in the College's Environmental Studies Program, teaching several core courses, serving on its advisory board, and assisting in advising student.

I am currently a graduate student at Western Illinois University working toward my LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor). From there, I plan on getting my LCPC and going on for my Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision in order to be a professor of counseling education. I have been working at Augustana since February 2024 and enjoy helping students learn more about themselves and find ways to manage stress and difficult emotions.
I work from a Gestalt perspective, which focuses on increasing a person's awareness of themselves. The Gestalt motto is that awareness necessarily brings change. In session, this can look like role-play, art, movement, talk therapy and much more. I like to work with students to understand their values, put names to emotions, use special interests to understand their own lives, and clarify thoughts and intentions. Above all, my goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment where students can find support for their unique journeys.
