I entered college intending to be a pre-med student, but within two weeks I had completely changed my mind and decided to pursue a degree in chemistry. The abrupt change of heart came about due to the talent my general chemistry professor had for making connections between the molecular world and the macroscopic world of everyday experience. I became convinced that everything we see touch, smell, and taste could be explained and understood by the interactions between atoms, ions, and molecules (objects no larger than one ten-millionth the size of the period at the end of this sentence). I have spent the intervening years seeking to make connections between molecular and macroscopic phenomena and to share this insight with my students.

In my teaching I try to show my students that the chemical world is just as logical and predictable, and hence comprehensible, as the world they inhabit by teaching them the principles that underlie chemical behavior rather than encouraging rote memorization of seemingly random and arbitrary facts. My ultimate goal is to convince students that chemistry is not an impenetrable and inherently difficult subject, and that if they are able to accept and understand the forces that govern the interactions between atoms, ions, and molecules that they too can be successful in the study of chemistry.

Outside of the classroom, much of my time is spent guiding students in original chemical research. Students in my research group have access to modern instrumentation and equipment that allows them to synthesize and characterize extremely air- and moisture-sensitive organometallic complexes for use as catalysts. Recently my students have presented their research at a regional symposium hosted by the University of Chicago, and at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Anaheim, CA. I anticipate opportunities to present our research at conferences and in scholarly publications in the near future.

The ability to communicate effectively is such an important part of our everyday lives! As a speech-language pathologist for more than 20 years, I have been blessed to be able celebrate my clients' milestones with them, both large and small.

The reason I love working at Augustana is because I get to continue as a practicing clinician, but I am also helping to teach and inspire the next generation of professionals! I consider myself to be a bit of an "eclectic"in my professional life - I love to learn,  and have happily attended conferences and workshops that will help me to be a valuable member of the Communication Sciences and Disorders department, including working with tongue thrust, accent modification, fluency disorders, voice disorders, and aural rehabilitation.

I hope that students will see my commitment to my clients and be inspired to reach for their very best!

When I started college – at Gustavus Adolphus,  a school much like Augustana –  I had no idea what I wanted to be “when I grew up.”  Everybody around me seemed to have such clear plans, not only what major, but which minors or even what program they were going to enter after graduation.

I was desperate for some goal to work toward. My dad told me “Take the classes you enjoy and it will work out.” I took chemistry, physics, computer science…  but still didn’t feel like I knew what I wanted to do. Then I realized I had taken every math class I could at Gustavus and I still wanted to learn more.

I was amazed to learn I could get paid to go to grad school. I got a teaching fellowship at the University of Oregon.  That is where I found I not only loved to do math, I  loved to teach math.

I tell my advisees to take classes because they enjoy them  and it will lead to a career they enjoy … Augustana is a good place for that, time to explore options, a huge variety of classes to take and the liberal arts requirements as motivation to take classes you might not otherwise consider.

Associate Professor of Mathematics, Co-Chair of Mathematics and Computer Science, Earl H. Beling Chair of Mathematics

I'm from Brockton, Mass. I did my undergrad at Northeastern University in Boston with a double major in computer science and mathematics.

Went on to University of Illinois at Chicago for a master's in pure math and PhD in applied mathematics. My thesis was on numerical analysis schemes for pricing stock options (calls and puts).  What I research today is Bitcoin, and other crypto-currencies.
