Housing info for winter break 2020
Here is general information about housing during the 2020 winter break. If you still have questions, email Residential Life or call 309-794-2686.
Q: When do the halls close for break?
A: Anyone planning to leave for Thanksgiving should check out no later than noon on Thursday, Nov. 26. Anyone planning to remain later than noon on Nov. 26 should complete the “Winter Break Housing Request Form” at housing.augustana.edu before Monday, Nov 9.
All residence halls and TLAs will close for the break at noon on Saturday, Dec. 12. Housing on campus beyond Dec. 12 will be available only for students who absolutely need to remain on campus (primarily international students). This applies to students living in residence halls and TLAs.
Q: When do the halls reopen?
A: If you are participating in J-term, you will be able to return to campus by appointment on Saturday, Jan. 9, or Sunday, Jan. 10.
If you are NOT participating in J-term, you will be able to return to campus by appointment on Monday, Feb. 8, or Tuesday, Feb. 9, before spring semester classes begin.
Note that all students living on campus during J-term must be enrolled in a J-term course. Please contact your academic advisor if you still need to register for a J-term course.
Q: Can I stay in campus housing for the break?
A: If you have somewhere else that you can go, you should plan to leave campus during the break. Winter break housing will be available only for those who need it. To request housing for any portion of the winter break, complete the “Winter Break Housing Request Form” at housing.augustana.edu before Monday, Nov 9.
Q: Can I return to campus before Jan. 9?
A: To request housing for any portion of the winter break, complete the “Winter Break Housing Request Form” at housing.augustana.edu before Monday, Nov 9.
Q: If I need to remain on campus for the entire break, may I stay in my room?
A: TLA residents with permission to stay on campus during the break may remain in their TLA. Residence hall students with permission to stay on campus during the break will be temporarily reassigned to empty TLAs, so that students will have access to a kitchen during the weeks when the dining hall is closed.
Q: Do I need to pack all my things and move out for the break?
A: If you are planning to return for J-term or spring semester, you do not need to pack all of your things. Along with anything you need during the break, please make sure to bring home any valuables. Students who don’t have approval to remain on campus during the break will be expected to return their keys before leaving campus and their card access will be temporarily deactivated.
Q: How do I check out when I am ready to leave?
A: The Office of Residential Life will collect keys from all students when they leave for break. You will receive instructions for scheduling a departure appointment to return your keys by mid-November.
Q: If I leave for Thanksgiving, may I return to complete the last two weeks of the semester on campus?
A: If you leave for Thanksgiving, you should NOT return to campus until the beginning of J-term (if you are taking a J-term class) or spring semester. This is to help prevent the risk of bringing the virus back to campus after the holiday. All classes after Thanksgiving will be fully remote.
Q: What should I do before I leave?
A: Your CA will provide you with detailed instructions before you leave. Please unplug all appliances, empty out and defrost your minifridge, take out trash, lock windows and turn off lights. Staff from the Office of Residential Life will be inspecting all rooms and TLAs in early December.
Q: If I’m traveling to another country, will I need to quarantine before returning to campus?
A: Yes, if you travel outside of the U.S., you will need to plan to quarantine for two weeks when you return to the U.S., before coming to campus. If you have someone you can stay with, you may quarantine off-campus with your friend or family member. If you live in a TLA, you may quarantine there. If you live in a residence hall, you will be able to quarantine at the Holiday Inn in Rock Island at no cost, and with all your meals provided.
