Augie Sweethearts: Lindsey and James Hawkins, Class of 2007
Jamie and I met in the cafeteria on the first day of preseason, before school had even begun. He was there for football practice and I was there for volleyball. As a freshman, being required to be on campus two weeks before school begins is slightly intimidating, and entering the cafeteria on that first day was even more so. Long story short, as I was gathering my lunch together, I managed to spill my drink all down the front of me. Jamie happened to be standing right there with a few other football boys and as I looked up for help, all I saw was them laughing at my dread and anxiety.
Needless to say, it was not love at first sight. But it did spark a friendship and something we would talk about for years to come. We hung out almost every day thereafter — Jamie, me, a few other football players and one of my volleyball teammates. We called ourselves “the crew”. Friendship grew to like, which eventually turned to love and we were engaged the summer before our junior year. I still remember my volleyball coach calling to ask if I would please wait to get married until after graduation so I could finish out my senior year of playing.
We were married the summer after we graduated, in August of 2007, so we have been married now for 11 years. We have two beautiful children and one currently on the way. After all this time, who would’ve thought that spilled milk would’ve brought us to this point.
