Augie Sweethearts: Helen Moretz '64 Stahl and Dick Stahl ’63
An Iowa Commuter’s Eye
By Dick Stahl '63
One look at her face in the crowded hall between classes
on second floor of Old Main was enough. Like a snapshot,
her image developed in my mind as I wondered what it would take
to date someone like that. We crossed paths on the sidewalk to East Hall,
but I said nothing. Friends usually accompanied her.
One October noon in Denkmann Library,
I glanced right. It was her—ten feet away—reading
and alone. I freshened up in the men’s restroom, took a drink
at the fountain, and passed her once, then almost twice,
before joining her. She was elementary education, and her name
was Helen Moretz from Tiskilwa, Illinois. I reread Poe’s To Helen.
I was in love too.
“That was the only day in four years I did not go to Westerlin for lunch,”
she later revealed like Destiny’s Sweet Dessert.
