Frieze Lectures: The Year That Rock Island Began

The Frieze Lecture Series is a 19-year partnership between the Rock Island Public Library and Augustana College. This year's theme is "1841, the Year That Rock Island Began."

Euphemia Peterson nursing papers

Collection of materials from Euphemia Peterson’s nursing career. Peterson graduated from Augustana Hospital Training School in Chicago in 1911 and received additional training in public health nursing at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. She was a registered nurse in Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska.

Charles and Sofia Haag artists’ papers

This collection includes materials related to the artists Charles and Sofia Haag. Charles Haag was a Swedish-American sculptor and woodcarver best known for his carvings that expressed the struggle of labor and immigration as well as his whimsical woodcarvings that paid homage to nature. Some of his better-known works include The Immigrants, The Strike, The Watchman, and Labor Union (later known as In Union There is Strength). His best-known woodcarvings come from his Spirits of the Forest series. Sofia was a Swedish-American weaver and textile artist who invented her own loom.

First Lutheran Church (Sherrard, Ill.) records

The First Lutheran Church in Sherrard, Illinois was erected in 1908, and dedicated on Sunday, February 14th of 1909. This collection contains pastoral and treasurers reports, as well as records of ministerial acts and membership records dating from 1909-1980. 

Astrid Lodge No. 9 (Omaha, Nebraska) meeting minutes and other materials

This collection contains meeting minutes from the Afternoon Past President’s Club, and a ledger of financial records from the Astrid Lodge No. 9, founded in Omaha, Nebraska around 1906. The Astrid Lodge No. 9 was composed of young immigrant women from Sweden, whose presidents formed the Afternoon Past President’s Club, and came together once a month for lunch and a meeting.

Nytta och Nöje club (Rock Island, Ill.) records

Nytta och Nöje was founded at Augustana College on February 22, 1900. Its main mission was to preserve Swedish culture among people from or around Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois. The collection consists of meeting minutes 1900-1984, group histories, program information, a portrait of members from 1905, and 17 audiocassette recordings of programs from the 1970s. 

Lutheran Hospital (Moline, Ill.) records

This collection consists of financial and other information of the Lutheran Hospital, Moline, Illinois. Also includes information on the International Congress of Nurses 1929 meeting in Montreal, Canada, and a history of the Phoebe Circle, a support circle for the hospital. 

John Ericsson Republican League of Illinois records 

The John Ericsson Republican League of Illinois (first named the Swedish-American Republican League of Illinois) was organized and incorporated in 1894 in order to exert a Scandinavian-American influence on American politics. The league held an annual convention and banquet on or around March 9 in celebration of John Ericsson Day. Leading Republicans have attended and addressed League conventions, including President William Howard Taft in 1912. These materials were likely accumulated by George C. Lofgren of Galesburg, IL during his involvement with the League.

Swedish Colonization Company (Davenport, IA) records

The Swedish Colonization Company was founded on June 13, 1884. The company’s main business was to “investigate and acquire possession of…agricultural land in the western and southwestern parts of the United States; and to sell them to, and colonize them with Swedish and other Scandinavians…who immigrate here; thereby harboring hopes to be able to protect them against fraud and to assure them good land fit for agriculture, and social and religious benefits suited to their wants." Collection includes one ledger of minutes of stockholders and Board of Directors meetings.
