Each fall semester, Augustana devotes a day to an alternative, multidisciplinary approach to learning. These Symposium Days include invited speakers, faculty, students and alumni.
This year's fall Symposium Day theme is Civil Discourse.
About the theme
• How do people constructively engage with others who have differing viewpoints on important topics?
• How do they engage in respectful discussions?
• With so much intense dispute about sources of information, how do they find common ground and what are the relevant standards of expertise?
• How do they avoid echo chambers to find broader perspectives?
• How do they maintain an open mind?
Well-Being Lab: Question, persuade, refer for suicide prevention
The Learning Commons presents a series of well-being labs to provide students with knowledge and skills from a variety of different disciplines intended to improve their overall sense of well-being.
Just like CPR, QPR ( Question, persuade, refer for suicide prevention) is an immediate response to someone in crisis and can save lives. QPR is the most widely taught Gatekeeper training in the world.
In honor of Suicide Awareness Month, the Office of Student Well-Being, the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity, and the Office of Student life host this workshop to teach students what they can do to help.

Dr. Shelley Haley: 'What's a Black Feminist like me doing in a field like this?!'
Dr. Shelley Haley will present the Antiquity in the New Millennium lecture: "What's a Black feminist like me doing in a field like this?!"
She is a professor of Africana studies and Classics at Hamilton College, the Edward North Chair of Greek and Greek Literature, and president of the Society for Classical Studies. She applies Black feminist and critical race approaches to the study and teaching of Classics.
In this lecture, she will be reflecting on her experiences as a Black feminist in a largely white, male field.
Bystander intervention workshop
This is an interactive workshop to teach all members of the Augustana community strategies for preventing sexual violence.
Coffee with Cops
Meet Augustana's Public Safety staff and officers from the Rock Island Police Department. Coffee and doughnuts will be available.
Finishing Strong: finals prep
Finish Strong focuses on essential skills needed to finish the semester strong. This workshop is ideal for students interested in learning more efficient and productive ways to prepare for final exams.
Staying Strong: self-advocacy and resilience
Staying Strong focuses on maintaining students' momentum throughout the semester. This workshop discusses student rights, responsibilities, how to advocate for oneself, how to identify resources on campus, and how to become a more resilient student in the face of challenges.
Staying Strong: study strategies
Starting Strong covers study strategies to help students maximize the time spent studying so that they can more easily recall the information later and be more successful in their courses.
Starting Strong: time management for fall semester
Starting Strong focuses on essential skills needed to begin the semester strong. This workshop covers time management strategies that help students become more organized, less stressed, and more balanced.
Campus History Tour
The Student Government Association will host a Campus History Tour led by Kai Swanson, special assistant to the president.
